Breakfast Recipe: Marin House French Toast

It’s true, you know–food tastes better on vacation.

Having said that, we have a couple of recipes that taste really really good any time–on vacation, at home, at a family gathering. Our Famous French Toast is one of those recipes.

It is one of two recipes that we constantly give to our guests, and it is the one that we get the most photos of when our guests make it at home. One year at Christmas, we had 6 different people send us photos of them making it for their family!

If you’d like to try it, there are a few tips to make it as good as Mary’s: buy a good squishy French bread (it doesn’t have to be stale like some other recipes), flip the bread before you bake it in the morning (to get the yumminess equally on each side), and add a dose of love.

And, if you can swing it, get somebody else to make it for you!

Marin House French Toast Recipe

serves 8 – 10

Ingredients :

1 loaf French bread
8 large eggs
2 cups half and half
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon cinnamon

Dash salt

Topping:

2 sticks butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Slice French bread into 1-inch slices. Arrange slices in a buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt and whisk until blended. Pour mixture onto the bread slices making sure all are covered. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

The next day, flip the pieces of bread over, then spread the topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes (until puffed and lightly golden) at 350 degrees.

Serve with whipped cream, and a strawberry for some color.

Enjoy!
