Most days, I barely know what was going on yesterday.
But today, I know what was going on 448 years ago…the founding of our beautiful city!
To be historically accurate, the city was actual founded on September 8. But this year we’re celebrating today, at 10:00 at the Middion de Nombre de Dios.
This heritage event will feature:
– The historical re-enactment of admiral Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles’ landing in 1565 by Florida Living History Inc.
– A Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated by Bishop Felipe J. Estevez, Bishop of St. Augustine.
– A Grand Procession following the Mass of Thanksgiving.
– A performance of a scene from Lope de Vega’s El Nuevo Munro descubierto port Cristobal Colon (The New World Discovered By Christopher Colombus), by Florida Living History Inc.’s “Theater with a Mission” group. This presentation is funded by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council through the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Additional activities will take place next door at Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park (www.fountainofyouthflorida.com), following Theatre with a Mission’s performance.
So what are you waiting for?? Get out and celebrate!! (And mark your calendars, because it’s only 2 more years til the big 4-5-0!!)
