Golfing Paradise: St. Augustine’s Best

In a state known for its amazing golf courses, St. Augustine has more than its fair share of beautifully manicured options. What’s especially nice about golfing in and around St Augustine is that there’s something for everyone – whether you’re a seasoned pro or a casual golfer.

If you’re coming to St. Augustine for a golfing getaway, check out a few of the courses nearby:

The island green, the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, surrounded by water on 3 sides.

TPC Sawgrass

We will start with the most famous – TPC Sawgrass, home to THE PLAYERS Championship. TPC Sawgrass is known for its challenging layout, including the iconic 17th island green, which has become one of the most recognizable holes in golf. The course was designed by Pete Dye.

Golfers visiting TPC Sawgrass can play on two championship courses: the Stadium Course and Dye’s Valley Course. The Stadium Course presents golfers with strategic challenges, water hazards, and undulating greens that demand precision and skill. Meanwhile, Dye’s Valley Course offers a more forgiving (but still challenging) round of golf. It is well suited to players of varying abilities. If you want to walk in the footsteps of the Players Championship players, choose the Stadium Course.

Aside from the world-class golfing experience, TPC Sawgrass features top-notch amenities. Extras include a luxurious clubhouse, professional instruction, and dining options overlooking stunning Florida landscapes.

Insider Tips: There are lots of great food options around TPC Sawgrass. We like two of them that are close but off property–Aqua Grill for its amazing fish (the local snapper Cantonese is a favorite) and Pusser’s for its drinks and laid-back atmosphere. Both restaurants offer views of the water.

TPC Sawgrass is such a popular destination, we have a second insider tip. Ponte Vedra Beach is only about 20 miles from our Beachcomber Cottages–just a short drive up one of the most scenic roads in Florida, A1A. If you plan on golfing a lot–or attending the Players Championship in March–stay in our Beachcomber Cottages and get a leg up on traffic. Check out the stunning views from the Royal Palm Suite, or travel with friends and stay at the recently renovated Oceanview Cottage.

World Golf Village

Located just a short drive from historic downtown St. Augustine, World Golf Village is a golfer’s paradise. The area boasts several notable courses as well as attractions dedicated to the sport.

Within World Golf Village are two championship courses:

King & Bear:

Designed collaboratively by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, the King & Bear course combines elements of both legends’ design philosophies. With wide fairways framed by pristine natural surroundings, this course offers a challenging yet enjoyable round for golfers of all levels.

Slammer & Squire:

Designed by architect Bobby Weed along with Hall of Fame Members, Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen, Slammer & Squire features a traditional Florida layout with generous fairways and strategically placed hazards. The course’s design highlights the region’s natural beauty, including picturesque views of nearby water features.

Beyond golf, World Golf Village provides a range of amenities such as practice facilities, golf instruction from PGA professionals, and dining options overlooking the meticulously manicured greens.

Insider’s Tip: The World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum moved at the end of 2023. Unfortunately, it is no longer located in World Golf Village. If you’re looking to see the legends’ lockers, plan a trip to the museum’s new home in North Carolina. The Hall of Fame was just one attraction in World Golf Village, however. The area still offers amazing courses, the St. Johns County Convention Center, Caddyshack Restaurant (yes, owned by Bill Murray and his brothers), and the PGA Tour Golf Academy.
